First background campaign

Detector moved underground in the Gator box and installed in the borated-PE shielding borrowed from the Baudis group.

Summary of the runs

  • GAGG_SelfTrigger_HV_1.4kV_UG_bkg_20231218_174913.root to GAGG_SelfTrigger_HV_1.4kV_UG_bkg_20240109_122152.root
    Usable. 24hr long (except for the first file). Variable threshold based on baseline+RMS. Timestamp not usable due to bug in DAQ software.
  • GAGG_SelfTrigger_HV_1.4kV_UG_bkg_20240110_122154.root to test_new_20240116_164636.root
    Forget about them.

Second background campaign

  • Installed metal mesh around HV an signal cable to see if the noise bursts disappear, with no improvement.
  • Tested USB isolator (12 MBps) to see if the noise bursts disappear, but it significantly increases the dead-time, so forget about it.
  • Fixed bug on the timestamp calculation in the DAQ software.

AmBe measurement

AmBe source n. 132 with neutron activity of ~50 neutrons/sec installed in the morning of April 8, 2024. The source was placed in front of the detector, inside the borated-PE shielding, with an additional 5cm thick layer of standard PE as a moderator. An additional 5cm thick lead shielding was placed inside the borated-PE on the sides and above the detector. On April 10, at 14:10, the lead shield was removed and the AmBe measurement restarted with the borated-PE and the PE moderator only. On April 11, at 11:50, the PE moderator was removed and a 20x10x5cm Cu brick was placed between the source and the detector to suppress the 4.4 MeV gamma and to mimick the neutrons from (alpha,n) reactions in the crystal.

    Crashed after ~3hr due to memory leak in DAQ program. Data should be recoverable, but meta-data are missing from raw data file.
  • GAGG_SelfTrigger_HV_1.4kV_UG_AB_20240408_144004.root
    Killed after ~2hr to solve the memory leak. Data should be recoverable, but meta-data are missing from raw data file.

(Gamma-n) measurements

Custom-made (gamma,n) source composed of a lens with 232Th glass and mica with 238U placed in front of a 2.4mm thick Be layer. In addition, we placed a 5cm thick copper brick to suppress the count rate from gamma events, and 5cm of standard PE as a moderator. Energy threshold set to ~2.3 MeV to suppress the trigger rate and avoid writing huge files.

  • Files GAGG_1.4kV_UG_gamman_20241220_150633.root to GAGG_1.4kV_UG_gamman_20250114_051338.root
    Good. These are the actual (gamma,n) data, with a net count rate above 3.5MeV of around 5.5 events/hr.
  • Files GAGG_1.4kV_UG_gamman_2cmAl_20250114_172836.root to
    Good. Data taken with a 2cm Al brick in place of the 2.4cm Be layer to cross-check that all events above 3.5MeV seen with the Be are indeed neutrons.
